8. Innocence

"How could someone do this?" Astrid whispered, closing her eyes and turning away from the corpse.

Tammrab didn't answer.

"Have you?" She didn't look at him as she spoke. "Have you...?"

He only nodded. Excuses were of no use with Astrid.

Although she couldn't see him, she guessed his answer. She squeezed her eyes even tighter, trying to shut out the world. After a while, she opened her trembling lips to murmur, "I've always been called innocent. I've never seen some things, I've never understood some things... I'm a child."

She inhaled with a sharp, shallow breath. "Tammrab, what do you gain when you lose your innocence? Maturity?" She glanced over her shoulder through the tears clinging to her eyelashes. "Or guilt?"
