"The world will tell us no if we try to, but who are they to tell us what to do?" Nancy lifts her hand to Louis' cheek.
It is decided; this is the answer. No more begging the world to recognize them. No more hiding in fear, recoiling from angry eyes. Now is the time to walk hand in hand. Now is the time to shake a fist at society.
"If we don't do it now, who's gonna do it for us?" Louis covers her hand with his own. "If we wait, ain't nothin' gonna change. Now's our time, girl."
Louis stands and pulls Nancy to her feet. They can feel the terrified pulse through their fingers, but, together, the terror becomes manageable. Together, her hand isn't white and his isn't black. So they take a breath and brush past the doorman, who stares.
Louis looks over his shoulder at the man and calls, "Ain't nothin' to see, mister--just me and my gal."
It's no longer a question. Now it's only an answer.
